The scout
Ok here’s the story. Willy and I take off yesterday around noon to location scout for our upcoming production of “Relapse,” the greatest thriller ever to be made. In Kona. Anyways, we’re driving south of town, where the vegetation is more lush, up and down narrow streets, peaking around every coffee tree and overgrown driveway looking for the perfect “drug house” which is featured in this film. We’re not having much luck. We grab a few double cheeseburgers ($4 total, the only meal our budget can afford), and head back towards Kona a little disappointed. As an after thought We decide to head up Old Poi Factory Road. Although Willy had been up it before and hadn’t found anything, it goes by a lot of coffee farms so we decide to give it another chance.
Bada Bing! We pull up to a weed infested dirt driveway that winds through overwhelming vegetation on either side concealing what lies at the other end. It looks awesome! We park the car at the road and cautiously walk down the driveway. As soon as a dilapidated red house on stilts comes into view, a vicious K9 the size of a woman’s purse comes barreling towards us barking loudly as well. It’s stops about 20 feet short of us but the barking doesn’t relent. A woman suddenly emerges about 40 feet away, up on the front Lanai and leans over the railing to get a good look at us. “hello” she says questioningly. After we state our reason for being there over the obnoxious yapping, she finally puts away her proverbial shotgun and comes down to meet us.
We finally get a good look at this place and we both look at each other realizing how perfect it is. It looks like a dump. The woman looks Hawaiian with long black hair and wearing a mumu and she turns out to be very nice. We talk with her for a few minutes telling her about ourselves and our project and how her property would be perfect for our film (of course without telling her exactly why). At this moment I notice the hindquarters of the little yappy dog and that he’s got gonads the size of a large papaya. They’re literally dragging. This has nothing to do with the story, I just thought it was worthy to note.
She tells us how this is the oldest coffee farm in the area and says she’ll check with the co-owner, her brother, and see if we can shoot there.
If we get this location we’ll still need an interior but we’d be halfway there! The saga continues so stay tuned…
Love, Andrew
