Adventures in the Cloud Forest

Well hello world wide web!

Kim here. I am working in the art department for Relapse. I have the great responsibility to draw the storyboards and man, oh man, am I reaping the benefits!

Alright, let me explain myself. I basically was able to fulfill my dreams of being Indiana Jones/intrepid adventurer for two hours so that when it’s time to story board I know what I am drawing. For me that entitles a Thursday afternoon trudging in ankle deep mud searching for lava tubes in the Cloud Forest in Hawaii! What an adventure!

Cloud forest

So we drove out of Kailua-Kona into the rain forest (which is like 20 minutes away) to this guys house. He’s a very clever botanist and he loves the rain forest! He knows every plant, where they’re from, how old they are, what their characteristics are, and everything. [insert name drop here] Tim Burton wanted to use his property for Planet of the Apes but it fell through because he loves his forest that much to protect it from a large movie crew. So I feel privileged for the oppertunity to film and explore his forest. It’s really beautiful and reminds me of Irian Jaya where I used to live for 2 years.

Alas we find lava tubes! The old lava rocks inside are so black it’s like you’ve never seen black before. The tubes run parallel to the ground for miles. We climbed in one at little ways and turned off the lights. Which is funny because you think it’s so cool and exciting when your there, but it’s like being anywhere else and closing your eyes but somehow 50 times more exhilarating.Anyways, that was fun location scouting. I pretty much feel like after that experience I want to give up my aspirations of being an art director and be a location scout!

Well I’m out, back to drawing in the office under florescent lighting.
